Ajax, Ontario... a little slice of heaven here on earth. The history of Ajax is everywhere - as close as the nearest street sign! Most of the streets in Ajax are named after the crew and officers of the HMS Ajax, the World War II Royal Navy ship after which the Town is named. Our main street, Harwood Ave., is named for Commodore Henry H. Harwood, commander of a flotilla of British warships - HMS Ajax, HMS Exeter and HMS Achilles - that engaged and routed the powerful German pocket battleship Graf Spee at the Battle of the River Plate, near the Uraguayan port of Montevideo in South America in 1939. Exeter Road was named after the HMS Exeter and Achilles Road was named after HMS Achilles. On some streets you can find a tree dedicated to the veteran after whom it is named.
